The Pacific Northwest is home to some of the world’s most majestic marine life, including orcas, humpback whales, and gray whales. As boaters, it's essential to not only appreciate the beauty of these creatures but also do our part to protect them. That's where the "Be Whale Wise" program comes in — a vital initiative designed to raise awareness and ensure that boaters know how to navigate responsibly around whales.

What is Be Whale Wise?
"Be Whale Wise" is a set of guidelines and best practices aimed at promoting the safe and respectful coexistence of boaters and whales in the waters of the Pacific Northwest. By following these guidelines, boaters can help protect these incredible animals from disturbances caused by human activity, including boat noise, vessel strikes, and habitat disruption.
The program encourages boaters to maintain a safe distance from whales, avoid disturbing their natural behavior, and take care when boating in areas where whales are known to frequent. The goal is simple: to raise awareness and reduce the impact of boating activities on these vulnerable creatures.
Key Guidelines for Boaters
Here are some essential rules to keep in mind when you’re on the water:
Stay 200 yards away: When you spot a whale, stay at least 200 yards away. Approaching too closely can disturb the animal and potentially harm it.
Slow down: Reduce your speed when traveling in whale-watching areas, especially in areas where whales are likely to be present. Slow speeds reduce the risk of striking a whale and minimize boat noise that can disrupt their behavior.
Avoid creating wakes: When near whales, avoid creating large wakes that could disturb their movement, or even force them into dangerous situations.
Don’t interrupt feeding or resting: If you see a whale that appears to be feeding or resting, don’t approach it. Respect its need for space to thrive in its natural environment.
Keep a safe distance: Stay clear of whale groups, and avoid any unnecessary maneuvering that could disturb their natural movement patterns.
Free Whale Flag: Show Your Support!
As part of our commitment to promoting whale awareness, we’re offering free whale flags to boaters who visit our office! These flags are a great way to show your support for the Be Whale Wise program and help spread the message of responsible boating. The flag serves as a reminder of the importance of respecting marine life and keeping a safe distance when encountering whales on the water.

Why a Whale Flag? Displaying the whale flag on your boat is a simple yet powerful way to let others know that you prioritize the well-being of whales and are committed to safe boating practices. It’s also a visual reminder to fellow boaters to follow the Be Whale Wise guidelines.
Ready to show your support for whale protection? Visit our office to pick up your free whale flag and help spread awareness about the Be Whale Wise program. By displaying the flag on your boat, you’re not only promoting safe boating practices, but also demonstrating your commitment to protecting the whales that make the Pacific Northwest so special.
